Over more than 20 years in surgical practice, Dr. Pawlinga has consistently cared for patients across a wide range of backgrounds, including  from the LGBTQIA+ community. Over time, he recognized a recurring pattern: many patients felt overlooked, misunderstood, judged, or uncomfortable seeking care within traditional healthcare settings, and in some cases were traveling abroad in search of more financially accessible options that did not always provide the same standards of safety, follow-up, or long-term support.

What stood out most was not just the clinical need for hair restoration, but the personal need to be seen, heard, and treated with respect as their authentic selves. Many patients weren’t simply looking for a procedure—they were looking for a provider who would understand their goals without judgment and support them through the entire process.

That experience shaped a deeper commitment to creating a more intentional, inclusive environment within his practice. From that foundation, SAFE was developed as a clear message to patients: this is a space where individuals from the LGBTQIA+ community are welcomed, respected, and supported with the same high standard of surgical expertise and continuity of care offered to every patient.
